Vermudo

Vermudo is a medieval Iberian given name, most prominently borne by several rulers of the Kingdom of León in the late first millennium. In Latin chronicles the name appears in forms such as Vermodus, Vermuto, or Vermudo.

Vermudo I of León is the earliest king commonly listed with the name; the chronology of his reign is uncertain, with dates placed in the late 9th or early 10th century by different sources. His position in the royal line helped establish the Vermudo lineage within León’s dynastic history.

Vermudo II and Vermudo III were later rulers who continued the tradition of León's kingship. Their reigns, like those of other Leónese monarchs, are described in medieval chronicles as dealing with ongoing frontier warfare, border diplomacy with neighboring Christian realms, and internal noble power struggles. The sequence culminated with Vermudo III, who died without a male heir, after which the throne of León passed to the Castilian line and the Vermudo branch effectively ended in León.

In modern usage, Vermudo remains primarily of historical interest. It occurs in academic references to the Leónine kings and appears occasionally as a given name or surname in Iberian contexts, though it is rare today.
