In vermouthforward drinks, vermouth—whether dry, sweet (rosso), or bianco—provides the primary aromatic and taste profile, with other ingredients playing a supporting role rather than defining the drink.

Construction and characteristics: Vermouthforward cocktails are typically built around a vermouth base, using a relatively high proportion of vermouth compared with the other ingredients. The supporting components—such as a small amount of a spirit, bitters, citrus oils, or a hint of liqueur—are chosen to enhance the vermouth’s aromatics and balance, not overpower it. History and usage: The concept of vermouthforward is more a modern menu classification than a formal historical category. It gained prominence with the craft cocktail movement, where bartenders experiment with the relative prominence of vermouth to create distinct profiles. Classic examples cited by bartenders include the Martinez (Old Tom gin with sweet vermouth and small amounts of maraschino) and versions of the Martini or perfect Martini that emphasize vermouth (such as equal-parts versions).
