Verkkoviestintäprotokollat, or network communication protocols, are standardized sets of rules and conventions that govern how data is transmitted and received across a computer network. These protocols ensure that devices can understand each other, regardless of their underlying hardware or software. They define the format of data packets, the order in which they are sent, and the actions to be taken upon receiving them.

One of the most fundamental protocols is the Internet Protocol (IP), which is responsible for addressing and routing data packets across the internet. IP works in conjunction with the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to provide reliable, ordered, and error-checked delivery of data. TCP ensures that all data arrives in the correct sequence and without corruption.

Other important protocols include the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and its secure version, HTTPS, which are used for transferring web pages. The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is used for sending emails, while the Post Office Protocol (POP) and Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) are used for retrieving emails.

Network protocols are organized in layers, often referred to as a protocol stack, such as the TCP/IP model or the OSI model. Each layer handles a specific aspect of network communication, with protocols at higher layers relying on the services of protocols at lower layers. This layered approach allows for flexibility and modularity in network design. The widespread adoption of these standardized protocols has been crucial for the development and expansion of the global internet and other networked systems.
