Verkkohallinta is the practice of overseeing and controlling a computer network and related services to ensure reliable operation, security, and performance. In Finnish IT contexts it covers the administration of network devices, servers, storage, and services that depend on the network. The aim is to provide connectivity and services with defined levels of performance, availability, and security.

Key areas include monitoring and fault management, configuration management, change management, performance management, security management, and incident response. These activities span network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls and wireless access points, as well as servers and applications.

Approaches range from centralized management consoles with agents to distributed architectures, and from on-premises platforms to cloud-based services. Telemetry is commonly collected via standards and protocols such as SNMP, NetFlow/IPFIX, sFlow, SSH or API access, and syslog.

Typical tools include network monitoring systems and platforms, configuration management tools, and security event tooling. Examples often cited are Nagios, Zabbix, PRTG, and SolarWinds, as well as SIEM for event correlation. The practice is used in enterprises, service providers, and educational institutions and is related to IT service management and network design.

Challenges include heterogeneity and scale, security risks, and the need for skilled personnel and robust change processes. Effective verkkohallinta aims to minimize downtime, optimize resource use, and support business continuity.
