Verehüüvevastased, also known as anticoagulants or blood thinners, are a class of drugs that prevent or reduce blood clotting. They work by interfering with the complex cascade of biochemical reactions that lead to the formation of a blood clot. These medications are crucial in treating and preventing a range of serious medical conditions where abnormal clotting poses a significant risk.

The primary uses for anticoagulants include the management of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition where blood clots form in the deep veins, typically in the legs, and pulmonary embolism (PE), which occurs when a clot breaks free and travels to the lungs. They are also vital in preventing strokes in individuals with atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder that can cause blood to pool in the heart, increasing the risk of clot formation. Furthermore, anticoagulants are used to prevent clots in patients with artificial heart valves and in those who have recently undergone certain surgical procedures.

There are two main types of anticoagulants: vitamin K antagonists, such as warfarin, which work by inhibiting the vitamin K-dependent clotting factors, and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), which target specific clotting factors like Factor Xa or thrombin. Heparin, another important anticoagulant, works by potentiating the activity of antithrombin, a natural inhibitor of clotting. The choice of anticoagulant depends on various factors, including the patient's medical history, the specific condition being treated, and potential drug interactions. Regular monitoring is often necessary, especially for vitamin K antagonists, to ensure therapeutic effectiveness and minimize the risk of bleeding.
