Verätzung

Verätzung, also known as a chemical burn, is damage to the skin or other tissue caused by contact with a corrosive substance. The severity of a verätzung depends on the type of chemical, its concentration, the duration of contact, and the area of the body affected. Acids, alkalis, and oxidizing agents are common culprits.

Symptoms of a verätzung can range from redness and pain to blistering, ulceration, and in severe cases, tissue necrosis. The pain may be immediate and intense, or it may develop gradually depending on the chemical. Some chemicals can cause systemic toxicity if absorbed through the skin.

Immediate first aid is crucial. This typically involves removing any contaminated clothing and flushing the affected area with copious amounts of cool, running water for at least 15 to 20 minutes. It is important to avoid neutralizing the chemical with another substance unless specifically advised by medical professionals, as this can sometimes worsen the injury.

After initial flushing, medical attention should be sought. Healthcare providers will assess the extent of the damage, clean the wound further, and administer appropriate treatment, which may include pain management, antibiotics to prevent infection, and specialized wound care. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. Prevention is key, and this involves handling corrosive chemicals with care, wearing appropriate protective gear, and ensuring proper storage and labeling of such substances.
