Vehicle-to-network (V2N) refers to the transmission of data between a vehicle and wide-area networks, including cellular networks and cloud services, enabling access to remote information, applications, and services that are not available through short-range vehicle connections alone. It is a component of the broader vehicle-to-everything (V2X) ecosystem and complements vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications by providing connectivity to back-end systems, data centers, and service platforms.

Technologies and standards supporting V2N include cellular communication systems such as LTE and 5G, with 3GPP specifications that cover vehicle-to-network use. IP-based networking, secure communications protocols, and network slicing in 5G help ensure scalable, authenticated access. Edge computing near the vehicle, as well as cloud computing in data centers, enables real-time analytics, remote diagnostics, software updates, and access to cloud-based services like navigation, fleet management, and telematics.

Applications of V2N span several domains. Telematics and fleet management rely on remote data feeds and centralized dashboards; remote diagnostics and over-the-air software updates keep systems current; real-time navigation can incorporate cloud data such as traffic or weather; and safety and emergency services can benefit from network-delivered information. Infotainment and personalized services also leverage V2N connectivity.

Challenges include ensuring reliable coverage and low latency, particularly in rural or subterranean environments; managing data costs and roaming; protecting security and privacy; and achieving interoperability across vehicle manufacturers and networks. Ongoing standardization aims to harmonize data formats, security models, and privacy protections to support broad V2N adoption.
