Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) is a set of wireless communication technologies designed to enable direct information exchange among vehicles and between vehicles and various elements of the road environment. The aim is to improve safety, mobility, and traffic efficiency by sharing timely data about speed, position, hazards, and other contextual information.

V2X encompasses several communication modes. Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) enables direct exchanges between nearby vehicles. Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) allows communications with traffic signals, road sensors, and other roadside equipment. Vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) facilitates alerts to vulnerable road users through devices or wearables. Vehicle-to-network (V2N) provides access to cloud services and applications via cellular networks. Some descriptions also include vehicle-to-device (V2D) and vehicle-to-cloud (V2C) components within the broader ecosystem.

Two main technical paths have evolved. DSRC (IEEE 802.11p) has been used in various regions under ITS-G5 naming, while cellular V2X (C-V2X) relies on 4G/5G networks and 3GPP specifications. Standards bodies involved include IEEE, ETSI, 3GPP, and ISO for related safety and interoperability aspects. Deployment ranges from pilots and field tests to production vehicle features and roadside infrastructure.

The primary goals of V2X are to reduce crashes and injuries through early warnings, improve traffic flow, enable cooperative perception and platooning, and support telematics and over-the-air updates. Challenges include security and privacy, authentication and trust, latency and reliability requirements, spectrum allocation, and cross-vendor interoperability. Adoption varies by region and market readiness, but V2X is often viewed as a foundational technology for connected and autonomous mobility.
