Veenijadasi

Veenijadasi is a small town and municipality in the northern coastal region of the fictional country of Lyria. It lies on the shores of Veen Bay and is surrounded by peat bogs that have long shaped its economy and landscape. The municipality covers about 210 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 3,900 in the latest census.

The name Veenijadasi derives from local words for peat and settlement; the suffix -dasi marks a place. The area combines low-lying marshlands, fen, and sandy dunes, with a temperate maritime climate. The coastline features several coves and wetlands designated as nature reserves.

Records mention Veenijadasi from the 15th century; peat extraction emerged in the 17th century and expanded in the 19th century, driving growth. The town gained municipal status in the 19th century; in the late 20th century the industry diversified toward sustainable peat use, forestry, and tourism. A regional center for renewable energy planning was established nearby in 2014.

The economy historically centered on peat harvesting and processing; in recent decades it shifted to eco-tourism, renewable energy, and agriculture. The population is predominantly rural, with a relatively balanced age distribution reflecting aging in the wider countryside.

Key landmarks include the 17th-century parish church, a small peat museum, and a coastal nature reserve. An annual peat harvest festival in autumn celebrates regional heritage with crafts, music, and demonstrations of traditional milling.
