Veekvaliteedi
Veekvaliteedi is the Estonian term for water quality, referring to the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of water bodies that determine their suitability for ecosystems, human use, and compliance with standards. In practice, Veekvaliteedi is assessed by measuring a set of indicators: physical (temperature, turbidity, color, conductivity); chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates, ammonia, metals, pesticides); and biological (macroinvertebrate communities, algae, and microbial indicators such as E. coli). Seasonal variation and location influence values.
Estonia conducts regular monitoring of rivers, lakes, coastal waters, and groundwater as part of national programs
The regulatory framework combines EU directives and national legislation. The EU Water Framework Directive requires maintaining
Veekvaliteedi data support decisions on pollution control, land use, recreation, and habitat protection, and are used
