Geographically, Vedenkeston sits in a mild lowland valley beside the meandering River Lorn. The surrounding land is a mosaic of pasture, hedgerows, and small deciduous forests. The climate is temperate maritime, with cool winters and warm summers.

The town traces its documented history to the 12th century, when a market cross marked the later Market Square.
