Vastuvõtjarakkudeks, also known as acceptor cells or recipient cells, refers to a cell that receives genetic material from another cell. This process is a fundamental aspect of various biological phenomena, particularly in microbiology and genetics.

In bacterial conjugation, for instance, a donor bacterium transfers genetic material, such as a plasmid, to a recipient bacterium. The recipient cell then incorporates this new genetic information, which can confer new traits like antibiotic resistance. Similarly, in transduction, bacteriophages act as vectors, carrying bacterial DNA from one bacterium to another. The bacterium that acquires this DNA is the recipient cell.

In broader genetic engineering and cell biology, recipient cells are those that are engineered to express foreign genes or to undergo genetic modification. For example, when scientists introduce a gene into a cell culture to study its function, the cells in that culture are considered recipient cells. The efficiency with which a cell accepts and integrates foreign genetic material is often a critical factor in the success of these procedures. Understanding the characteristics and behavior of recipient cells is crucial for advancing research in areas such as gene therapy, synthetic biology, and the study of microbial evolution.
