A common tool for implementing vastuunjaon is the RACI model. RACI stands for Responsible (the person or group completing the task), Accountable (the person ultimately answerable for the task’s outcome), Consulted (those who provide input), and Informed (those kept up to date). Variants such as RASCI or DACI add or modify roles to fit organizational needs. In Finnish contexts, the emphasis is on clear ownership and the assignment of decision rights alongside task execution.

Applications of vastuunjaolla span multiple domains, including corporate governance, project management, software development, construction, healthcare, and regulatory compliance. Benefits include clearer decision rights, reduced ambiguity, improved accountability, and faster decision-making. Potential drawbacks are over-formalization, ambiguous or multiple “accountable” roles, and resistance to change if roles are not well understood or supported by processes.
