Vastausvääristymistä, often translated as response bias or response set, refers to systematic tendencies in how individuals respond to questions or tasks, independent of the actual content of the questions. This phenomenon can significantly influence the results of surveys, questionnaires, psychological tests, and other data collection methods.

There are several types of response biases. Acquiescence bias, also known as "yea-saying," is the tendency to agree with statements regardless of their content. This can be influenced by politeness or a desire to be agreeable. Conversely, disacquiescence is the tendency to disagree. Another common bias is social desirability bias, where individuals respond in a way that they believe will be viewed favorably by others, potentially distorting their true attitudes or behaviors. Extreme responding is a bias where individuals tend to choose the extreme ends of a rating scale, while neutral responding involves consistently choosing middle options.

Understanding and mitigating response biases is crucial for ensuring the validity and reliability of research findings. Researchers can employ various strategies to minimize their impact. These include careful question wording to avoid ambiguity, using a mix of positively and negatively worded items, randomizing the order of questions, and assuring respondents of anonymity. In some cases, specific scales or methods can be used to detect and account for response biases in the analysis phase.
