Varmennetuns

Varmennetuns is a small archipelago located in the northeast quadrant of the southern hemisphere, comprising nine principal islands and numerous smaller islets. The largest landmass, Varmen Island, covers an area of approximately 3,200 square kilometres and serves as the political and economic centre of the archipelago. The territory is situated at a latitude of 31°S and a longitude of 57°W, and it is bordered by the expansive Varmen Sea to the north and the Oceanic Trench to the south.

Geographically, Varmennetuns features a combination of volcanic highlands, temperate rainforests, and low-lying coastal plains. The islands were formed by a series of volcanic eruptions that occurred between 4.5 and 3.8 million years ago. The most recent eruption, on the island of "Smolder", took place in 1984 and produced a basaltic lava flow that has since been incorporated into the local ecosystem. The archipelago’s climate is moderated by westerly trade winds, resulting in mild temperatures year-round and a high rainfall regime that sustains its rich plant life.

The history of Varmennetuns can be traced back to the early 1800s, when it was first discovered by coastal traders from the neighboring continent of Southport. The 19th century saw the establishment of the first permanent settlement at Port Varmen, and by the early 1900s the islands had become a strategic naval outpost. In 1967, Varmennetuns achieved full sovereignty, and a parliamentary government was instituted. Since independence, the islands have pursued a policy of economic diversification, focusing on tourism, marine conservation, and high‑tech agriculture.

The culture of Varmennetuns is a syncretic blend of indigenous traditions and influences brought by European settlers and later migrants from other islands. Traditional music often incorporates the “four‑strum harp,” while folklore frequently references the mythical “Sea‑Woven Dragon” said to guard the Southernine Sea. Language is predominantly Varmenese, a mixture of Algonquian roots and Romance loanwords. Annual festivals, such as the Harvest Riot and the Lantern of Lights, attract both local visitors and international tourists, reinforcing the archipelago’s reputation as a centre of cultural heritage and ecological stewardship.
