Varmekjernen

Varmekjernen is a Norwegian term that translates to “the warm core.” It is used to denote a central, hot region within a body or system, or more generally the source of heat in an object. The word combines varm (warm) with kjernen (the core). The term is not a fixed technical designation in all disciplines, but rather a descriptive label that can appear in various contexts.

In geophysics and planetary science, varmekjernen may be used in non-technical explanations to describe zones of elevated temperature inside a planet, moon, or star, such as areas where heat from formation or radiogenic decay concentrates. In formal scientific terminology, however, terms like inner core and outer core are standard, and varmekjernen tends to appear as a figurative or introductory description rather than a precise label.

In energy technology, varmekjernen can refer to the hot core of a nuclear reactor or to a geothermal heat source. In nuclear contexts, the exact Norwegian term for the central, heat-producing region is usually kjernen i reaktoren (the reactor core). In geothermal engineering, the phrase may describe a high-temperature heat reservoir, distinct from surrounding rock and fluids.

In fiction and popular culture, varmekjernen is often used metaphorically to denote a central heat source powering devices, cities, or entire worlds, highlighting its connotation of concentrated heat and power.
