Varasügis

Varasügis is an Estonian term that refers to the early autumn season. It generally marks the transition from summer to a more distinctly autumnal period, typically occurring in September and sometimes extending into early October. This phase is characterized by a noticeable shift in weather patterns and natural phenomena.

During varasügis, the days begin to shorten significantly, and the temperature starts to drop, though daytime temperatures can still be relatively mild. There's often a sense of coolness in the air, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Rainfall becomes more common, and the landscape starts to change. Leaves on deciduous trees begin to turn, starting with hints of yellow and red, although the vibrant, full-blown autumn colors are usually associated with the later stages of autumn.

The flora and fauna also show signs of this seasonal transition. Migratory birds begin their journeys south, and many plants prepare for winter by shedding leaves or developing seeds. Harvests of late summer and early autumn crops, such as apples, pears, and root vegetables, are often completed during this period. Varasügis is a time of gradual change, signaling the end of summer's warmth and the approach of colder weather.
