Varandis

Varandis is a city-state and regional capital in the northern maritime zone of the fictional continent of Ancarra. It serves as the political and economic center of the Varandic Commonwealth.

The name Varandis is of debated origin; scholars link it to the ancient Var language, while others attribute it to a studio family name used by early settlers. The city sits at a natural harbour along the Varal River.

Founded in the 10th century as a trading post, Varandis grew under republic administrations and maritime leagues. It gained de facto autonomy in the 14th century and formal independence in 1680 after a regional conflict.

Varandis operates as a constitutional city-state with a bi-cameral council and an annually elected mayor-president. The council delegates powers to sector committees on security, finance, and urban planning.

Its economy combines port services, shipbuilding, finance, and high-value manufacturing. The port handles regional trade, supported by a light rail system and a network of road corridors. Renewable energy projects anchor recent growth.

Varandis has about 180,000 residents, with a multilingual population. The official language is Varandic, with minority communities speaking neighboring regional languages. The city hosts annual music, literature, and maritime festivals.

Key institutions include Varandis University and the Maritime Academy. Notable landmarks are the Grand Harbor, the Guild Courtyard, and the Old Town ramparts, which survive as a historic district.
