Valuvavesiviemärit, often translated as gravity sewers, are the most common type of wastewater collection system used in municipal and domestic settings. They rely on the natural force of gravity to transport sewage from its source, such as homes and businesses, to a treatment facility or a point of discharge. This is achieved by designing the sewer pipes with a consistent downward slope.

The effectiveness of a gravity sewer system depends on maintaining this precise slope. Too little slope can lead to slow flow, sediment buildup, and blockages, while too much slope can cause the wastewater to flow too quickly, potentially leaving solids behind. The pipes are typically made of durable materials like PVC, concrete, or cast iron to withstand the corrosive nature of sewage and external pressures.

Valuvavesiviemärit are generally less expensive to install and maintain than pressurized sewer systems because they do not require pumps to move the wastewater. However, their functionality is limited by topography; they cannot effectively transport sewage uphill without the use of lift stations. This makes them most suitable for areas with suitable natural gradients. Proper design and regular maintenance are crucial to ensure the long-term performance and prevent environmental issues associated with sewer overflows.
