Valuuttaoptioiden are financial derivatives that give the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a specific amount of one currency for another currency at a predetermined exchange rate on or before a specific expiration date. These options are traded on exchanges and in the over-the-counter market. There are two main types of currency options: call options and put options. A currency call option gives the holder the right to buy a currency, while a currency put option grants the right to sell a currency. The price paid for an option is called the premium.

The value of a currency option is influenced by several factors, including the current spot exchange rate, the strike price of the option, the time remaining until expiration, the volatility of the underlying currency pair, and interest rate differentials between the two currencies. Investors and businesses use currency options for various purposes, such as hedging against adverse currency fluctuations, speculating on future exchange rate movements, and gaining exposure to foreign markets. For instance, an importer expecting to pay a foreign supplier in a future currency might buy a call option to lock in a favorable exchange rate, protecting themselves from a potential depreciation of their domestic currency. Conversely, an exporter anticipating receiving foreign currency might purchase a put option to safeguard against its devaluation. The flexibility offered by options, allowing for potential profit with limited downside risk (the premium paid), makes them a valuable tool in international finance.
