Valokatalyyttisistä, often translated as photocatalytic, refers to a process where light energy is used to accelerate a chemical reaction. This is achieved through the use of a photocatalyst, a substance that absorbs light and then facilitates the reaction without being consumed itself.

The fundamental principle of photocatalysis involves the absorption of photons by the photocatalyst, leading to the excitation of electrons. These energized electrons can then participate in redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions, either by transferring to another molecule to reduce it or by reacting with water or oxygen to produce reactive species like hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anions. These reactive species are highly effective at breaking down organic pollutants and other undesirable compounds.

Common photocatalysts include titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is widely used due to its stability, low cost, and effectiveness. Other materials like zinc oxide (ZnO) and cadmium sulfide (CdS) also exhibit photocatalytic properties. The effectiveness of a photocatalyst is influenced by factors such as its band gap energy, surface area, and crystal structure, which determine its ability to absorb light and generate electron-hole pairs.

Photocatalytic processes have numerous applications. They are utilized in environmental remediation for air and water purification, breaking down harmful organic pollutants and reducing greenhouse gases. In industry, photocatalysis is employed for self-cleaning surfaces, producing hydrogen fuel from water, and in some chemical synthesis processes. The development of more efficient and cost-effective photocatalytic materials and systems continues to be an active area of research.
