Key aspects include illuminance levels appropriate to task (measured in lux), luminance balance and glare control, color rendering (CRI), color temperature, and the relationship with daylight (daylight factors and controls). Efficiency and sustainability considerations, such as energy use, maintenance factors, and lamp life, are also part of the guidelines.

Standards are typically set by national building codes and harmonized European standards. In Estonia, many guidelines align with EVS standards and EN 12464-1 for workplace lighting. Compliance is usually checked during design, permitting, and building inspection phases, and ongoing maintenance must meet defined levels.

Designers consider occupancy patterns, tasks, and safety requirements, choosing light sources, fixtures, and controls to meet valgustingimused. This may involve daylight integration through window placement, automated controls, such as daylight sensors and occupancy detectors, and considerations for aging populations or sensitive tasks.
