Valgusrikkeid

Valgusrikkeid, often referred to as valgus faults or valgus deformities, are anatomical deviations characterized by an outward angulation of a limb or a part of the limb. The most common manifestation is genu valgum, or "knock knees," where the knees angle inward and touch or nearly touch when the legs are straightened. This can lead to the ankles and feet remaining apart. Other areas can also be affected, such as the foot (pes valgus), where the ankle rolls inward, causing the arch to flatten.

The causes of valgusrikkeid are varied and can include congenital factors, developmental issues, trauma, or underlying medical conditions like rickets, osteoarthritis, or certain genetic syndromes. In children, mild valgus is often a normal developmental stage that corrects itself over time. However, persistent or severe valgus can lead to pain, instability, altered gait, and secondary problems such as osteoarthritis in the affected joints.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, assessing the degree of angulation, and observing the patient's gait. Imaging studies, such as X-rays, may be used to evaluate bone alignment and joint health. Treatment strategies depend on the severity, age of the patient, and underlying cause. For children with mild or resolving valgus, observation may be sufficient. For more severe cases, interventions can range from physiotherapy and orthotic devices to surgical correction, such as osteotomies (bone cutting and realigning) or guided growth procedures.
