Vale-alimentação is designed for the purchase of raw food items for home consumption. Employers can deduct a portion of the benefit's value from the employee's salary, usually a small percentage, while the remainder is subsidized by the company.

The specific rules and regulations surrounding vale-alimentação are governed by Brazilian labor laws and specific government programs like the Programa de Alimentação do Trabalhador (PAT). Employers are not obligated to offer this benefit, but it is a common practice, particularly in larger companies. Employees cannot typically convert their vale-alimentação balance into cash.
