Vakuumiympäristöjä, often translated as vacuum environments, refers to enclosed spaces from which matter has been removed to create a low-pressure state. This low pressure is significantly below atmospheric pressure, and the degree of vacuum can range from a partial vacuum to an ultra-high vacuum. The properties of a vacuum are distinct from those of normal atmospheric conditions, primarily due to the absence of air molecules.

These environments are crucial in numerous scientific and industrial applications. In scientific research, vacuums are used to study phenomena that would be affected by air, such as the behavior of gases at low pressures, material properties in the absence of oxidation, and the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Particle accelerators, for example, rely on vacuum chambers to allow subatomic particles to travel unimpeded by air resistance.

Industrially, vacuum environments are essential for processes like vacuum metallization, where thin films of metal are deposited onto surfaces in a vacuum to create reflective coatings or protective layers. Sputtering and physical vapor deposition are common techniques employed in these vacuum-based processes. The food industry also utilizes vacuum packaging to extend the shelf life of products by removing air, which inhibits spoilage. Furthermore, vacuum pumps are the devices used to create and maintain these low-pressure conditions.
