Vajaliku

Vajaliku is a constructed language created for the fictional Vajal people in contemporary fantasy and role-playing settings. It functions as the community’s in-world language for everyday conversation, ceremonial poetry, and official inscriptions, appearing in novels, games, and fan works.

Etymology and classification: The name combines a root vaj- with the suffix -liku, intended to denote language. In-universe linguists categorize Vajaliku as an agglutinative language with basic SOV (subject–object–verb) word order and extensive case marking.

Phonology and grammar: The consonant system includes stops, fricatives, and glottalized sounds; vowels form a simple inventory with a front–back distinction. Vajaliku employs vowel harmony across affixes. Verbs encode aspect and mood through prefixes and suffixes; nouns show case through suffixes.

Writing system: Vajaliku is written with the Vajali script, a syllabary of around two dozen signs. The script is used for inscriptions and formal texts within the fiction, while a Latin transliteration is commonly provided for readers outside the world.

Usage and reception: In the fictional setting, Vajaliku originated among coastal trading communities and spread inland through contacts and exchange. It has a relatively small speaker base in-world and is the subject of linguistic study within the lore and among fans.
