Vairesn
Vairesn is a monotypic genus of lichen-forming fungi belonging to the family Verrucariaceae. The genus was first described in 2017 by lichenologist Dr. Elena Marquez in the Journal of Mycological Research, based on specimens collected from the alpine tundra of the Caucasus Mountains. The single species, Vairesn glacialis, is characterized by its tiny, gray-blue thallus and distinctive, spore-producing perithecia that are embedded in a mat of calcium oxalate crystals. Microscopic examination reveals ellipsoid ascospores measuring 3–4 micrometres in length, with a thick, multi-layered wall that is atypical among related genera.
The name vairesn is derived from the Latin verb variare, meaning "to change" or "to vary," reflecting
