Vaippoja

Vaippoja, commonly known as diapers in English, are absorbent garments worn by individuals who are unable to control their bladder or bowels. They are typically used by infants and toddlers during their potty training phase, but also by adults experiencing incontinence due to medical conditions, age, or disability.

The primary function of a vaippa is to absorb and contain bodily waste, preventing leakage and maintaining hygiene. Modern vaippoja are usually disposable and consist of several layers. An inner layer, often made of a soft, non-woven material, is in contact with the skin and designed to draw moisture away quickly. The absorbent core, typically made of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) and fluff pulp, locks away the liquid, turning it into a gel. The outer layer is a waterproof barrier, preventing leaks. Fastening tabs or adhesive strips are used to secure the vaippa around the wearer's waist.

Reusable cloth vaippoja are also available. These are made from absorbent fabrics like cotton or bamboo and require washing after each use. While they can be more environmentally friendly and potentially cost-effective in the long run, they demand more effort in terms of laundering.

The use of vaippoja is a common and necessary practice for many individuals, contributing to comfort, dignity, and social participation.
