Vainoharhaluulot, also known as persecutory delusions, are a type of delusion characterized by the persistent belief that one is being threatened, harassed, or persecuted by others. These beliefs are often unfounded and not based on reality, yet the individual experiencing them is convinced of their truth. The perceived persecutors can range from individuals known to the person, such as family members or colleagues, to more generalized groups like government agencies or even unseen entities.

The content of these delusions can vary widely. Individuals may believe they are being spied on, followed, poisoned, plotted against, or that others are trying to harm them physically, emotionally, or financially. These beliefs can be quite specific, with detailed narratives about how the persecution is being carried out and why. The individual may invest significant time and energy into trying to prove their beliefs or protect themselves from the perceived threat.

Vainoharhaluulot are a symptom of various mental health conditions, most notably schizophrenia and delusional disorder. They can also occur in other psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder, severe depression, and substance-induced psychotic disorders. The distress caused by these delusions can lead to significant functional impairment, affecting relationships, work, and overall quality of life.
