Vaihtovirtasiirtojärjestelmät, often referred to as AC transmission systems in English, are a fundamental technology for transmitting electrical power over long distances. Unlike direct current (DC) systems, AC systems utilize alternating current, where the direction of the electrical flow reverses periodically. This characteristic is key to their widespread adoption.

The primary advantage of AC transmission lies in the ease with which voltage levels can be transformed. Step-up transformers are used at power generation sites to increase the voltage for transmission, significantly reducing current. This lower current, in turn, minimizes energy loss due to resistance in the transmission lines, making long-distance power transfer economically viable. Conversely, step-down transformers are used near load centers to reduce the voltage to safer and more manageable levels for distribution and consumption by homes and industries.

The use of alternating current also simplifies the design and operation of electrical machinery, such as motors and generators. The inherent nature of AC allows for simpler construction and greater efficiency in many applications compared to their DC counterparts. The synchronization of multiple generators and the interconnection of power grids are also facilitated by the properties of AC.

However, AC transmission does have limitations. It is not as efficient as high-voltage DC (HVDC) transmission for very long distances or for transmitting power between asynchronous grids. Capacitive and inductive effects in AC lines can also lead to power factor issues and voltage fluctuations that need to be managed. Despite these drawbacks, AC transmission remains the backbone of most modern electrical power grids due to its cost-effectiveness, versatility, and the maturity of its associated technologies.
