Vaihtokytkin

A vaihtokytkin, often translated as a changeover switch or selector switch, is an electrical switch used to transfer a load from one circuit to another. Its primary function is to disconnect a device or system from its current power source and connect it to an alternative one. This is commonly employed in situations where there is a primary and a backup power supply, such as a mains electricity connection and a generator. When the main power fails, the vaihtokytkin can be manually or automatically operated to switch the load to the generator. Conversely, when the main power is restored, it can switch the load back.

These switches are available in various configurations, including manual and automatic types. Manual vaihtokytkimet require direct human intervention to operate. Automatic versions, often referred to as automatic transfer switches (ATS), are equipped with control circuitry that monitors the power supply and initiates the transfer of the load when necessary.
