Vaihtokytkimiä

Vaihtokytkimiä, known in English as changeover switches or transfer switches, are electrical devices used to manually or automatically switch between two or more power sources or circuits. They are fundamental components in electrical systems where power redundancy or alternative power sources are required.

The primary function of a vaihtokytkin is to ensure that a load is connected to only one power source at a time. This prevents dangerous feedback or short circuits that could occur if two sources were connected simultaneously. For instance, in a building with a primary power supply and a backup generator, a vaihtokytkin is used to disconnect the building from the grid and connect it to the generator when the grid power fails.

These switches can be designed for manual operation, where an individual physically moves the switch to select the desired power source. Alternatively, automatic transfer switches (ATS) are equipped with control circuitry that senses a loss of primary power and automatically activates the backup source. This is crucial for applications where continuous power is essential, such as in hospitals, data centers, or critical industrial processes.

Vaihtokytkimiä are available in various configurations and capacities, depending on the voltage, current, and number of circuits they need to manage. They are manufactured according to strict safety standards to ensure reliable operation and protection against electrical hazards.
