Vahrm

Vahrm is a coastal city located on the western shore of the fictional realm of Lyrath, within the archipelago of Karyos. It sits on a sheltered bay and has a long maritime tradition. The name derives from the old language of the region, meaning "place of coves and harbors."

Geography and urban layout

The city center occupies a crescent bay, with a hillside quarter connected by steep lanes. The harbor remains the economic core, while outer districts house shipyards and markets. A small river flows along the eastern edge, feeding the harbor and providing a source of fresh water.

History

Vahrm arose in the 11th century as a trading post for seafarers and grew into a regional hub by the 14th century. It withstood several sieges during regional conflicts and was rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1562. In later centuries, the city expanded its shipyards, granaries, and markets, adjusting to shifts in trade routes.

Economy

Today the port handles fish, grain, timber, and textiles. Shipbuilding and repair are important industries, supported by warehousing and logistics services. Tourism has increased, drawing visitors to historic streets and harbor views.

Culture and governance

The population is multilingual, with Lyrathi as the dominant language, complemented by merchant creoles. The Night Market festival celebrates crafts, music, and street food from across the archipelago. Vahrm is governed by a mayor and a council elected from merchants and residents, with emphasis on port infrastructure and urban safety.

Landmarks include the Silver Gate, the Lantern Market, and the old Town Hall. A cliff-side promenade offers views of the harbor and the sea.
