Vahedeid

Vahedeid is a term used in speculative philosophy and science fiction to denote a fundamental, indivisible unit within a modular ontology of identity. It is not a recognized concept in mainstream disciplines, and its precise definition varies by author. Etymology is uncertain; the coinage appears to draw on the Persian-Arabic root vahid meaning “one” or “unity,” combined with a suffix to form a class noun in some constructed linguistic frameworks.

In formal discussions, vahedeids are usually described as the smallest carriers of identity- or existence-related properties that can combine to form more complex entities. Depending on the theory, a vahedeid may be purely informational, lacking a body of its own, or it may be a concrete, persisting token that binds to others to sustain an entity across time and change. The notion is used to model questions about persistence, duplication, and transformation of beings, including digital or transferred minds.

In fiction, vahedeids enable explorations of continuity of self through replication, cloning, or mind-melding, and they often foreground ethical questions about rights and status of individual units. In scholarly contexts, the concept is employed as a thought experiment to test intuitions about what constitutes a person, a self, or an agent when substrates and modalities differ.
