Vacuum induction refers to a phenomenon where electromagnetic induction occurs in a vacuum. This typically involves a changing magnetic field that induces an electric current in a conductor, even when there is no material medium like air or plasma present between the source of the field and the conductor. The fundamental principle behind vacuum induction is Faraday's law of induction, which states that a changing magnetic flux through a surface induces an electromotive force (EMF) in any closed circuit bounding that surface.

In a vacuum, the magnetic field lines can propagate freely. When a conductor, such as a wire loop or a metallic object, is exposed to a time-varying magnetic field generated by, for example, an oscillating current in a coil, the magnetic flux through the conductor changes. This change in magnetic flux induces a voltage, or EMF, across the conductor. If the conductor forms a closed circuit, this induced EMF will drive an electric current.

This effect is crucial in various technologies. For instance, it underpins the operation of inductive charging systems where power is transferred wirelessly across a gap, often including a vacuum or air, to a receiving coil. It also plays a role in particle accelerators, where changing magnetic fields are used to accelerate and guide charged particles. In space applications, understanding vacuum induction is important for designing systems that are not susceptible to electromagnetic interference from changing magnetic fields in the absence of a conductive atmosphere. The absence of a resistive medium in a vacuum means that induced currents can potentially flow with minimal damping, although this is usually mitigated by the design of the conductor and the surrounding environment.
