Vértérfogat refers to the total volume of blood within the circulatory system of an organism. This volume is a critical physiological parameter that influences blood pressure, oxygen transport, and the overall functioning of the cardiovascular system. In adult humans, the average blood volume is approximately 5 liters, though this can vary based on factors such as body size, sex, and physiological state.

The composition of blood, a fluid connective tissue, consists of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Plasma, the liquid component, constitutes about 55% of the total blood volume and is primarily composed of water, proteins, electrolytes, and other dissolved substances. The remaining 45% is made up of cellular elements, with red blood cells being the most abundant.

Maintaining the correct vértérfogat is crucial for homeostasis. If blood volume drops significantly, a condition known as hypovolemia, it can lead to reduced blood pressure, inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues, and potentially shock.
