Växelsignalering

Växelsignalering, often translated as switch signaling or route signaling, is a system used in railway operations to control the movement of trains and ensure safety. Its primary function is to indicate to the train driver whether it is safe to proceed along a particular route, which includes both the track ahead and the correct alignment of points (switches). This system is crucial for preventing collisions and derailments, especially at junctions and crossings.

The core components of växelsignalering involve signals and points. Signals are visual indicators, typically red, yellow, or green lights, that convey instructions to the driver. Points are mechanical devices that can be moved to guide a train from one track to another. Växelsignalering ensures that a signal will only display a "proceed" aspect (like green) if the corresponding points are correctly set and locked for the intended route. Conversely, if points are not correctly aligned, the signal will display a "stop" aspect (red) or a restrictive aspect (yellow) to prevent the train from entering an unsafe path.

Modern växelsignalering systems are often integrated with interlocking mechanisms. Interlocking prevents conflicting routes from being set simultaneously, meaning that two trains cannot be directed towards the same section of track or towards a collision course. This interlocking is achieved through mechanical, electrical, or computer-based systems that ensure the physical or logical relationship between signals and points is maintained, guaranteeing safe train movements.
