Vätskebindningar

Vätskebindningar, often translated as fluid bonding or liquid bonding, refers to the phenomenon where liquids exhibit attractive forces with solid surfaces. This interaction is governed by intermolecular forces such as adhesion and cohesion. Adhesion describes the attraction between molecules of different substances, in this case, the liquid and the solid surface. Cohesion refers to the attraction between molecules of the same substance, which is important for the liquid's internal structure.

When the adhesive forces between the liquid and the solid are stronger than the cohesive forces within the liquid, the liquid will spread out and wet the surface. This is observed when water spreads on clean glass. Conversely, if the cohesive forces of the liquid are stronger than the adhesive forces with the surface, the liquid will tend to bead up and minimize contact with the solid. An example of this is mercury on glass.

The degree of vätskebindningar can be quantified by the contact angle, which is the angle formed at the point where the liquid-vapor interface and the solid surface meet. A low contact angle (close to 0 degrees) indicates good wetting and strong vätskebindningar, while a high contact angle (close to 180 degrees) signifies poor wetting and weak vätskebindningar. Surface tension, a property of the liquid related to its cohesive forces, also plays a crucial role in these interactions.
