Värintoistoominaisuus, often translated as color rendering or color reproduction, refers to the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of objects faithfully, as if illuminated by a standard or reference light source. It is a crucial characteristic, especially in applications where accurate color perception is important, such as photography, art, interior design, and retail.

The quality of color rendering is typically measured using the Color Rendering Index (CRI). The CRI scale ranges from 0 to 100, where 100 represents the ideal color rendering, meaning the light source reproduces colors identically to a reference illuminant (like daylight or a blackbody radiator at a specific temperature). A higher CRI value indicates better color rendition. For instance, a CRI of 90 or above is generally considered excellent.

Different types of light sources exhibit varying degrees of color rendering. Incandescent lamps traditionally have a high CRI, while some fluorescent lamps and early LEDs could have lower CRIs, leading to color distortion. Modern LED technology has advanced significantly, with many LEDs now offering high CRI values, making them suitable for demanding color-critical applications.

When evaluating light sources, it is important to consider not only their color temperature (which describes the perceived warmth or coolness of the light) but also their color rendering capabilities to ensure accurate and pleasing visual experiences.
