Uudelleenhyödyntämisellä, or recycling in English, refers to the process of converting waste materials into new, useful products. This practice is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy.

The recycling process typically involves collecting recyclable materials, sorting them, cleaning them, and then processing them into new products. Common materials that are recycled include paper, plastic, glass, metal, and electronics. Each of these materials can be recycled multiple times, reducing the need for raw material extraction and conserving natural resources.

Recycling has numerous environmental benefits. It reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions. It also conserves energy and natural resources. For example, recycling one ton of paper can save approximately 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, and 4,000 kilowatt-hours of energy.

Effective recycling requires proper collection systems, sorting facilities, and processing technologies. Community involvement and education are also crucial for successful recycling programs. Recyclable materials should be separated at the source, such as by using designated bins for paper, plastic, and glass.

Despite its benefits, recycling is not without challenges. Contamination of recyclable materials, such as food waste or non-recyclable items, can reduce the quality of recycled products and increase processing costs. Additionally, the global recycling market can be volatile, with prices for recyclable materials fluctuating based on supply and demand.

In many countries, recycling is mandatory for certain materials, and there are penalties for not recycling properly. Governments and private sectors often collaborate to promote recycling through incentives, such as deposit-return schemes and subsidies for recycling facilities. International cooperation is also essential for managing global waste and promoting sustainable recycling practices.
