Utlänningsnämnden

Utlänningsnämnden was a Swedish administrative authority that dealt with matters concerning aliens and immigration. Its primary role was to process and decide on applications for residence permits and other permissions related to foreigners staying in Sweden. The agency was established in 1969 and operated until 2006.

The mandate of Utlänningsnämnden was to ensure that immigration laws and regulations were applied correctly. This included assessing applications based on criteria such as family ties, employment opportunities, asylum claims, and other humanitarian reasons. The decisions made by the board could be appealed to higher administrative courts.

Over the years, the functions and responsibilities of Utlänningsnämnden evolved, reflecting changes in Swedish immigration policy and societal needs. The agency played a significant role in managing Sweden's immigration system during a period of increasing global migration.

In 2006, Utlänningsnämnden was abolished as part of a larger reorganization of Swedish migration authorities. Its responsibilities were largely transferred to the newly established Migration Board (Migrationsverket), which continues to handle all aspects of immigration and asylum matters in Sweden. The abolition aimed to streamline the administrative process and create a more unified approach to migration governance.
