Migrationsverket

Migrationsverket, officially the Swedish Migration Agency, is a Swedish government agency responsible for migration-related matters. It operates under the Ministry of Justice and is charged with processing and deciding applications for asylum, residence permits, work and study permits, family reunification, and Swedish citizenship.

The agency handles asylum and migration cases, assesses protection needs, and issues decisions on residence permits, including temporary and permanent permits. It also administers reception arrangements for asylum seekers and provides information and guidance to applicants throughout the process.

Migrationsverket maintains online services and information channels for applicants, and collects and publishes statistics on migration flows, decisions, and processing times. It also collaborates with employers, municipalities, and other public authorities to support integration and orderly migration.

Regionally, the agency operates offices across Sweden in addition to a central administration, enabling local case processing and outreach. It coordinates with other authorities and international partners on migration policy and practice.

Legal basis for its work comes from Swedish immigration law, notably the Aliens Act and related regulations. Decisions made by Migrationsverket can be subject to legal review within Sweden’s administrative court system.
