Uskuste

Uskuste is a small town and commune in the northern highlands of the fictional continent of Valoria. Nestled along the Usk River, it has a cool temperate climate and a compact town center, with a population of about 4,200.

The name derives from the Old Valorian usk, meaning “ford” or “crossing.” The surrounding landscape features mixed forests, slate hills, and agricultural valleys that shelter streams feeding the river.

Founded in the 11th century by settlers from nearby lowlands, Uskuste developed as a regional market stop on historic river routes. It gained a small fortress in the 14th century and later connected to the North Highlands Railway, promoting growth.

Government consists of a mayor and an eight-member town council within the North Highlands district of Valoria. The economy relies on dairy and crop farming, timber processing, and artisanal crafts, with tourism expanding around heritage and outdoor recreation.

Culturally, Uskuste hosts an annual harvest festival and a weekly market. Landmarks include Uskuste Manor (16th century), the Old Water Mill, and St. Mary’s Chapel. The population is primarily Valorian with small minority communities; education includes primary and secondary schools.

Transportation is via regional roads, limited rail service to Norvalis, and local bus routes.
