Usaldus

Usaldus is a concept in Estonian that denotes confidence or trust placed in a person, group, institution, or system to act in a reliable and benevolent manner. It encompasses the expectation that another party will behave in a predictable way and not take advantage of one's vulnerability.

Etymology: The noun derives from the verb usaldama (to trust) with the suffix -us forming a noun describing a state or quality.

Usaldus can be interpersonal, institutional, or societal. Interpersonal trust develops through repeated reliable interactions; institutional trust concerns confidence in governments, courts, media, and corporations; societal trust refers to the overall level of trust within a community or nation, influencing cooperation and social cohesion.

Factors shaping usaldus include perceived ability, benevolence, and integrity of the trusted party; transparency, consistency, accountability, and past experiences; and situational risk. Breaches of trust or perceived deception rapidly erode it.

Trust is a key driver of cooperation, compliance with rules, economic exchange, and the legitimacy of institutions. It is measured through surveys and indices of social trust, institutional trust, and trust in specific actors. In practice, high levels of usaldus correlate with more effective governance, better teamwork, and more stable social relations.
