Ureotomi

Ureotomi is a metabolic process found in some animals, particularly fish and amphibians, where urea is broken down into ammonia. This process is a key component of nitrogen excretion in these organisms. It is primarily carried out by the enzyme urease, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia. The released ammonia can then be further processed and excreted from the body.

Ureotomi plays a crucial role in managing nitrogenous waste. In aquatic environments, ammonia is relatively soluble and can be readily diluted and diffused away. For many fish, ureotomi allows them to convert the more toxic urea back into ammonia, which they can then excrete efficiently through their gills. This is in contrast to ureotelic animals, such as mammals, which retain urea in their bloodstream and excrete it via urine.
