Urbanistika is a field of study and practice that focuses on the planning, design, development, and governance of urban areas. In many Slavic languages, urbanistika denotes the discipline of urban planning or urban studies, encompassing both theoretical analysis of urban form and the practical processes of shaping cities.

Core activities include land-use planning and zoning, transportation planning, housing policy, environmental planning, and urban design. Methods commonly used are spatial analysis, geographic information systems, urban modeling, scenario planning, and public or stakeholder participation.

Practitioners work in municipal planning departments, private consulting firms, or academia. They prepare master plans, zoning codes, development guidelines, and environmental assessments, and they coordinate with engineers, architects, and policymakers to implement urban projects.

Education typically leads to bachelor’s or master’s degrees in urban studies, urban planning, or urbanistika, with varying professional licenses and certifications by country. The field emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration and ethical, inclusive governance.

Contemporary urbanistika engages with sustainability, climate resilience, transit-oriented development, density management, heritage preservation, and the integration of digital technologies through smart-city initiatives and data-driven planning. It also addresses equity, affordability, and the protection of vulnerable communities amid growth.
