Uralian

Uralian is an adjective that historically has been used to describe things related to the Ural region, the area surrounding the Ural Mountains on the boundary between Europe and Asia. The term derives from the Urals and can refer to geography, ecology, culture, or history associated with the region. In modern scholarly usage, "Uralian" is comparatively uncommon, and "Uralic" is the standard designation for the language family that includes the Finnic, Ugric, and Samoyedic languages.

In geography and ecology, Uralian features denote landscapes, climates, and wildlife found in the Ural mountain belt and neighboring areas such as the adjacent steppes and forests. In anthropology and ethnography, the term may loosely refer to peoples who live in or around the Urals, a region characterized by long-standing interaction among Slavic, Turkic, Finno-Ugric, and other communities.

Historically, some linguists in the 19th and early 20th centuries used "Uralian" to describe what is now called Uralic languages; this usage has largely fallen out of favor as terminology standardized around "Uralic."
