Upprunar refers to the Icelandic term for the geological phenomenon of volcanic eruptions, which are natural events where molten rock, ash, and gases are expelled from beneath the Earth's surface. Iceland, located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge—a divergent tectonic plate boundary—is particularly prone to volcanic activity due to its position over a hotspot where magma rises from the mantle. The country has experienced numerous eruptions throughout its history, shaping its landscape with lava fields, geothermal areas, and crater formations.

Volcanic eruptions in Iceland can vary significantly in scale and intensity. Some eruptions occur beneath glaciers, leading to explosive interactions between molten rock and ice, which produce powerful steam explosions and hazardous lahars (volcanic mudflows).
