Unterkunft is a German noun meaning lodging or accommodation. In German-speaking contexts it refers to a place where people stay temporarily or semi-permanently, including hotels, boarding houses, guesthouses, apartments, vacation rentals, hostels, and campsites, as well as more informal shelter such as emergency housing. The term is used in travel, tourism, and housing policy to describe the provision of overnight or long-term shelter.

Common types of Unterkünfte include hotels and inns, holiday apartments (Ferienwohnungen), vacation homes, hostels, bed-and-breakfast establishments, guesthouses, and rental apartments. In addition to conventional lodging, the term can cover student dormitories, employee housing, or shelters.

The choice of Unterkunft is influenced by price, location, services, and length of stay. Booking platforms, travel agencies, and tourism boards facilitate reservations. In many countries accommodations are regulated for safety, sanitation, and accessibility, with licensing, inspections, and classification schemes (for example, star ratings or quality marks).

Historically, Unterkünfte evolved from inns and taverns serving travelers to the diverse range of lodging available today. In German-speaking regions the word also applies to temporary or emergency shelter for people in need.
