Unionoids

Unionoids are a fictional taxonomic concept used in speculative biology and worldbuilding to describe a group of modular, fusion-capable aquatic invertebrates. The name hints at their social behavior, in which many small units join to form larger, cohesive bodies known as unions. They are not part of any real biological lineage.

Each unit, or module, is a compact, sessile or slow-moving body with a local nerve net and a small internal cavity that distributes nutrients. When modules contact one another, specialized adhesion proteins and signaling molecules promote intentional fusion, producing a single composite organism. A union can range from a loose assemblage of a few modules to a tight, polygonal sheet. Although a union functions as a unit, individual modules may retain limited autonomy to perform local tasks such as feeding or repair.

Life cycle: larval unionoids are free-swimming and settle on solid substrates. After settlement, receptive modules in proximity attach and fuse to form initial unions; subsequent modules continue to join to expand the colony. Reproduction occurs via production of vestigial reproductive modules or by budding of new units that can seed new unions. Some unions can split if environmental conditions favor autonomous modules.

Ecology and distribution: Unionoids are described as benthic, filter- or detritus-feeding organisms that stabilize the substrate and create microhabitats for other species. They are associated with temperate and cool-temperate reef and rocky habitats in the speculative world. Their fusion-based growth makes them resilient to localized disturbance, but stresses such as strong currents or chemical toxins can trigger fission or disassembly of unions.
